Monterosso - Cinque Terre Village
Monterosso al Mare
Accessible by car and connected by a tunnel, you can choose to visit the new village known as Fegina or the old village. Either location is worth a visit.
History buffs might be interested in knowing that for a brief period in the late 1940s, they believed Monterosso al Mare was too large to be part of Cinque Terre. Quickly realizing their mistake, they changed their minds and re-included it back in the fold.
The village of Monterosso al Mare dates back to the middle ages when forts were built to protect them from pirate attacks. Today, three towers remain visible.
One of the main points of interest is the large beach in Cinque Terre located right here in Monterosso al Mare.
This continues to be the most accessible of the village as it winds its way up a hillside. To-date there is about 1500 inhabitants in the village.
As mentioned, a tunnel links the old town with the new, where you can find a tree-lined promenade and a monumental statue of Neptune.
Don’t miss the panoramas along the entire coast that can be seen from San Cristoforo Hill, home to a 17th-century convent.
Before you head out of the village make sure you visit:
Church of St. John the Baptist located in the old part of town.
Chapel of Mortis et Oratonis located near the Church of St. John Baptist
Capuchin Monastery which dates back to the early 1600s
The Aurora Tower one of only three remaining
Soviore Santuary the most ancient Temple in Liguria which dates back to 1225
